Well we all might face this problem at some point of time, having an unwanted credit card is a bit of a common problem that many of us face nowadays, the easy access to these credit cards from the companies are lowering their value. And we tend to shell out a lot of money on the credit card purchases and many times it is an impulse purchase.
But the question still exists how do one get rid of the credit cards?
- Contact the company- if you are really confident enough to get rid of the credit card then contact the card issuer, one can give a call to the company as the number is always mentioned on the card itself. Make sure when you talk to the representative you also inquire about the card rewards (in case if you have any) and close your account only after you have redeemed your balance.
- Update the automatic payments – many of us forget this, however, it is very important that you contact your provider to update the payments and make new arrangements, for instance, if you have purchased any big appliance earlier using your credit card and you are still paying the installments, make sure you have made all the arrangements before closing the card.
- Destroy the card – Now it may sound dramatic but destroying a card is a must, one can cut the card with scissors or put it in the paper shredding machines. But if you have metal cards then you can call the company and ask for a pickup of the card so they can destroy the card for you.
- Stop carrying it – we all either have a wallet or a purse and we know that it has at least one credit card in it even though we were not using it earlier, credit cards can cause you impulse purchase. We must know that to get rid of the unwanted purchases we have to even throw them from our wallet. So the first thing that you have to do is remove them from your wallet.
Other than this you can also try mailing the credit card company or lower your credit limit. Make sure you go for the cards that give good returns and rewards so that they are beneficial to you even if you have it.
Credit card debt can be huge if you keep that card lagging on to you, so take steps and cancel the card if you do not want it. But before that go through all the inquiry about your regular payments or link ups or rewards before closing your account with the company, if you are just closing cause of the heavy bills. Then one can even ask their credit card companies to ask your creditors lower the interest rates for you.
Make sure you send and even receive a written confirmation via mail or letter about the closure of your credit card.
Your credit card balance will even affect your credit card score, so if it null it won’t really impact anyone.
